Beginning Farmer Business Training and Education Project
The New England Small Farm Institute (NESFI) received a 2-1/2year professional development grant from Northeast SARE (NESARE) to make its course and workbook Exploring the Small Farm Dream: Is Starting an Agricultural Business Right for You? more widely available, and to build a network of delivery partners. Since the project began in 2008, 34 service providers and educators from 8 Northeast states have attended train the trainer sessions, and many of them plan to begin offering the course in 2009-2010.
Designed for individuals who are considering whether to farm commercially, Exploring the Small Farm Dream has been field-tested by a variety of organizations and agencies in the Northeast and beyond. Through the NESARE Project, experienced Explorer facilitators conduct train the trainer sessions for service providers that want to consider adding Explorer to their beginning farmer “toolbox.” Participants learn how to use Explorer both in a classroom setting and as a one-on-one coaching tool, and are introduced to other NESFI resources.
